Jamal Roberts Opens Up About His Biggest American Idol Challenge: Singing New Songs Each Week

With a voice that blends gospel soul and pop precision, American Idol Season 23 standout Jamal Roberts has emerged as one of the most compelling artists in this year’s competition. Now part of the coveted Top 7, the Mississippi native is preparing for what might be his most demanding test yet — the Double Disney Night, airing May 11 and 12 on ABC.

While his performances have appeared effortless to viewers at home, Roberts revealed in a recent interview that one aspect of his Idol journey has pushed him harder than anything else: learning and interpreting new songs each week.

“I Didn’t Know Most of These Songs”

As American Idol heads into its final stretch, Roberts shared an honest look at the behind-the-scenes challenges he’s faced throughout the season.

“In a way, the songs are assigned. They’re on a list, so you have to choose from that list,” he explained.
“And if you’re like me — a church kid — you’re looking at that list like, ‘Okay, what is this?’”

While other contestants may have grown up immersed in pop and Disney playlists, Roberts has had to discover many of these songs for the first time, then make them his own under tight deadlines and national pressure.

“Most of the songs I’ve sung so far, I didn’t know. I had to really learn them. And that’s stressful,” he admitted.

A Rising Star With Heart and Humility

Despite the pressure, Roberts has maintained a calm, grounded presence, both on stage and off. That humility and authenticity have resonated with fans — especially those from his hometown of Meridian, Mississippi, where the support has been nothing short of overwhelming.

“The Class of 2016 has been supporting me wholeheartedly,” he shared.
“Even restaurants like Don P’s, where I’ve never been or met the owners — they’ve shown so much love.”

“You don’t have to meet someone to support them,” Roberts added, “and that’s what I love about people.”

His “I Believe” Performance Earned Him Top 7 Status

Jamal cemented his spot in the Top 7 with a breathtaking performance of “I Believe” by Fantasia — a song known for its emotional intensity and vocal range. His rendition brought the house down and earned unanimous praise from the judges.

  • Lionel Richie called him “a phenomenon.”

  • Carrie Underwood highlighted his “heart and control.”

  • Luke Bryan applauded his growth and consistency.

The performance quickly gained traction online, generating buzz across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook — with many fans calling it one of the season’s most powerful moments.
